ABOUT ME

Dave McAlisterHistory
I was born in 1971 in Windsor, Berkshire while my old man was serving in the Scots Guards and I spent the first 8 years of my life travelling around England and Germany while he got posted around (living in Aldershot, Munster (Germany), and Chelsea). In 1979 he was discharged and we moved to Dundee (which I consider to be my real home town – hence the reason I say I’m Scottish ;)).

In 1984 my old man had given me some money for my birthday and, as a fan of Fighting Fantasy books, I went looking for something more. While looking in Toysmasters on Commercial Street the red box edition of Basic D&D fell off the shelf above me and landed on my head. Picking it up I read the back and I was hooked. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until a couple of years later that I actually managed to find a proper group (although I did create quite a few dungeons using the rules). My first, proper, session was running Games Workshop’s Judge Dredd RPG to a bunch of more experienced roleplayers. It was a right mess. Thankfully, they didn’t seem to mind and I became a member of their regular group. We played AD&D (1st Edition!), WFRP (when it was released), and a few one-shots (including, but not limited to, RuneQuest, Top Secret/S.I., Toon, Paranoia and Traveller). My fondest memory is of the WFRP campaign which was a mixture of WFRP and Dragonlance. It ran for 2 years almost every night (we were all unemployed at that stage and living the royal life – roleplaying by night, sleeping by day (apart from when we had to pick up our giros ;)). Other highlights included clubbing together and getting the bus through to Glasgow to buy the latest book we felt we needed (Dundee didn’t have a roleplaying shop then) and the Dark Future “campaign” we had :)

In 1990 I left Dundee when I joined the Royal Air Force. Unfortunately, I eventually lost touch with everyone I used to roleplay with :( I’ve recently gotten back in touch with Sean, the guy who ran the WFRP/Dragonlance game, but he’s no longer roleplaying! The first 5 years of my RAF career were a roleplaying graveyard and I was forced into not gaming! Thankfully, a few guys got posted into my unit in 1995 and we started playing again. Mainly AD&D 2nd Edition and Top Secret/S.I. (although we also had a Necromunda “campaign” going as well).

As is the way with the RAF though, I got posted in 1996 to another unit without a roleplaying group. Thankfully though my old unit was only an hours drive away so I used to head back every few months and we’d play all weekend :) I keep on at the GM of the AD&D campaign to publish it, because it was great. I really loved playing Wulfgar Tannerson (a naive son of a, wait for it…, tanner ;)) who became a hero of Lionsca :D

In 1997 I was introduced to the RAF Wargames Association (which also included roleplayers) and took part in their annual championships, surprising everying (including myself it must be said) by coming first. My prize was free entry to Gen Con Europe (as it was called then) at Loughborough University and I attended my first convention!

I missed Gen Con 98, but was back for Gen Con 99. In the meantime though, I’d come second at the RAF Wargames Association 1998 championships, entered in the DMing category for the 1999 championships (coming second again), and organised a 24 hour sponsored charity event (MBH 99) in aid of Comic Relief (where I met and got to know Ratty and Sean Connor properly). While at Gen Con 99, I got talked into joining the Sarbreenar campaign plot team (little did I know that I would be the plot team!) and came third in the RPGA Members Competition (meeting Andrew Bourne who came first or second I can’t recall) and generally having a great time. I only list these competitions to show you all how great a roleplayer I really am ;) Of course, you all already know this :P

Being part of the Sarbreenar team meant that I got to know quite a few of the RPGA team in the UK and I became the RPGA Regional Director for Gloucestershire for a year or so (before the RPGA really imploded in the UK).

I left the Sarbreenar team in 2002 having been the plot controller for 3 years and arranged around 50 scenarios in that time! The reason I gave at the time was that my son was due to be born but, really, I was actually a bit burnt out.

Connor appeared in December 2002 and I left the RAF in April 2003 to look after him full time. I couldn’t stay away from campaign management though and in March 2003 (after a personal phone call from Patrick Kapera in the US!) became the UK Regional Branch Director for Living Spycraft. My attendance at conventions was limited though so I relied on running games for trusted friends who, in turn, ran that at conventions on my behalf :)

2003 also saw the start of UK Role Players after both the RPGA (UK) and Raven went the way of the dodo.

In 2005 I resigned from the Living Spycraft team after the campaign moved to the 2nd Edition of the Spycraft rules.

I did start running websites for various other UK living campaigns though (including Living Greyhawk, Dragonmouth, Lihr and For Queen & Country (the UK-only sequel to the Living Spycraft campaign). I also run the Conception and Con-Quest websites on behalf of the organisers of those conventions.

I also ran the RPG Area for Gen Con UK 2004 (in the tent at Minehead!) and was the Marketing Manager for Gen Con UK 2007 (but resigned before the event was run).

Current
I work from home as an IT Support Technician, running UK Role Players, Modus Operandi and various other roleplaying websites and, generally, enjoying life.

Games wise, I run, and play, various incarnations of Savage Worlds and Pathfinder.
